Tesla Model X: Wheel Sensor - TPMS (Remove and Replace)

Warning: If the vehicle has air suspension, activate "Jack" mode on the touchscreen before raising and supporting the vehicle. Removal

1. Remove the wheel (refer to procedure).
2. Remove the cap and inner core from the valve to deflate the tire.

Note: Check direction of tire machine rotation before starting procedure.

3. Release the tire beading from the wheel on the top side (outside).

   Caution: Ensure that the machine is away from the valve and sensor.

   Caution: The TPMS wheel sensor can be damaged if the instructions are not followed correctly.

   

4. Apply a suitable lubricant to the tire bead.
5. Position and secure the wheel on the tire machine with the front face up.
6. Rotate the wheel and tire so that the mounting head is 100 mm in front of the valve. Using a tire lever, lift the tire bead onto the mounting head.

   Note: Ensure that the tire bead does not slip on the wheel during removal/installation.

   

7. Release the tire bead from the wheel by rotating the machine.

   

8. Remove the nut that secures the valve to the wheel. Remove both the valve and wheel sensor.
9. Remove and discard the valve and screw from the wheel sensor.

1. Clean and inspect the wheel and valve hole. Remove any dirt, burrs, or swarf.
2. Install the valve retaining screw to the wheel sensor.

   Note: Ensure that the square faces are parallel with the slot in the sensor.

   

3. Screw the valve onto the sensor screw. Ensure that the valve screw is free to move in the slot.
4. Position the sensor and valve to wheel and loosely secure it with the retaining nut.
5. Holding the sensor firmly against the inside of the wheel, tighten the valve retaining nut (torque 8 Nm).

   Note: Before the full torque is reached, an internal break off ring will "give". Continue to tighten the nut until the full torque is achieved.

   

6. Inspect the sensor location; both feet should be in contact with the wheel. If the sensor is not firmly located it should be reinstalled using a new valve and screw.
7. Apply a suitable lubricant to the tire bead.
8. Ensure that the tire bead is correctly located between the sensor and the wheel.
9. Inflate the tire until both the tire beads are seated on the wheel. Adjust the tire pressure to the recommended pressure and install the valve cap.
10. Check the tire for air leaks.
11. Balance the wheel.
12. Install the wheel.
13. Lower the vehicle.
14. Perform the wheel sensor TPMS ID learn procedure (refer to procedure).
